Clarification re storage of pentobarbital
Storage requirements for pentobarbital may vary from State to State based on local regulations.
Some veterinary practitioners may have received information from various sources about a recent TGA decision on pentobarbital and what this means here in Victoria.
Veterinary practitioners who are practising in Victoria should be aware, that - depending on its packing and preparation - pentobarbital has the following listings under the Poisons standard:
- Schedule 4
- Schedule 8
- Appendix D, Item 9
- Appendix K.
Further, requirements in the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Regulations 2017 (Victoria) include that:
- when classified as a Schedule 4 poison, pentobarbital should be stored in accordance with Regulation 73
- when classified as a Schedule 8 poison, pentobarbital should be stored in accordance with Regulation 74.
